We are thrilled to invite you to join us for an exciting series of events designed to inspire, connect, and empower people from underrepresented groups and allies in STEM! Learn how to create a more inclusive and equitable research environment, and develop the skills and confidence to collaborate effectively with others.

Objectives

• Raise awareness about the impact of privilege and bias in research and collaboration
• Develop skills for effective and respectful communication, including giving and receiving constructive feedback
• Foster a culture of inclusivity and cooperation in meetings and team settings
• Create a platform where underrepresented groups in STEM can share their experiences and raise awareness of the challenges they face
• Inspire allies to take action and support underrepresented groups in STEM
• Networking opportunities for attendees to connect with each other and build relationships

Target Audience

• People from underrepresented groups (e.g. women, minorities, LGBTQ+) working in or interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields
• Allies who want to learn more about the experiences of these communities and how they can be supportive
• Anyone involved in collaborative work who is interested in promoting ethics and inclusivity

Format: Three workshops with presentations, discussions, solo and group work, and discussions over breaks.

Workshops

1. Privilege and Ethics in Data

Privilege awareness and learning about ethics when dealing with data in practice.

Problem Addressed:

When scoping a research question, you often notice a lack of understanding of how it impacts people who are different from those in the room. This can sometimes lead to incomplete research that you only discover later.

2. Non-violent Communication

Learning to give and receive constructive feedback.

Problem Addressed:

You work in a group and notice that you struggle to accept feedback when it is given to you. You might also feel uncomfortable giving feedback to others or want to give feedback more effectively.

3. Inclusive Meeting Culture

Understanding the effects of power imbalances in meetings and how to facilitate inclusive and cooperative meetings.

Problem Addressed:

You don't feel comfortable taking up space in meetings, and afterwards you realise that you could have said something, but didn't. Or sometimes you notice that you are the only person talking in meetings.
